Rahm Emanuel, a seasoned figure in Democratic politics, is contemplating a presidential run, bringing a fresh perspective on several core party issues. Emanuel has previously held prominent roles such as congressman, President Obama’s chief of staff, Chicago’s mayor, and the U.S. ambassador to Japan.
In a recent appearance on a podcast hosted by Megyn Kelly, Emanuel sparked praise for his stance on transgender issues, humorously suggesting the need for “witness protection” afterward.
During a comprehensive video interview with NPR in Washington, D.C., Emanuel expanded on his critiques of the Democratic Party, voiced his disapproval of the Trump administration, and offered strategic advice for the approaching midterm elections.
Highlights of the interview include:
U.S. Global Alliances Under Threat
Following Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s remarks at the World Economic Forum about the U.S.-led world order, Emanuel expressed agreement. Carney criticized the U.S. for abandoning its global leadership role, a sentiment Emanuel echoed, warning of the burdens this shift would place on Americans.
“Carney’s not wrong,” Emanuel stated. “We just decided that it’s a burden on us, and we’re going to see the price for that. And that price will be more than the American people, in a host of issues–economic, political, strategic, defense-wise–than the American people are ready to bear alone.”
Betrayal of American Ideals
Emanuel reflected on his family’s history, sharing how the idea of America as a haven contrasts sharply with recent immigration enforcement actions. He recounted the poignant images of ancestors who suffered in European pogroms, underscoring the dissonance between these memories and the current administration’s policies.
“The idea that you have ICE agents chasing people, firing tear gas… The president attacking people on both religion, gender or faith… That is unimaginable,” he commented.
Selective Cooperation with ICE
In a discussion about local cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Emanuel advocated for collaboration in specific circumstances. While he supports cooperation for convicted individuals in prisons, he is wary of blanket policies applied to those held in jails.
Educational Failings of Both Parties
After visiting Mississippi, Emanuel noted the state’s success in improving reading skills, attributing it to a bipartisan failure to prioritize education. He criticized Republicans for neglecting public education and Democrats for abandoning accountability.
“Republicans have walked away from public education, abandoned it,” he stated. “Democrats have abandoned accountability and standards.”
Focus on Economic Issues
Emanuel voiced concern over Democrats’ focus on social issues, such as transgender rights, at the expense of economic concerns. He emphasized the need for a shift in priorities, referencing his own leadership experience in Chicago.
On Megyn Kelly’s podcast, when asked, “Can a man become a woman?” Emanuel replied, “No.” This sparked discussion, but he clarified, “That’s not what I said,” explaining his intent was to highlight the issue’s distractive nature.
Key Focus for the 2026 Election
For the upcoming elections, Emanuel advised Democrats to center their campaign on opposition to Trump and the lack of accountability from Republicans.
“This is a referendum election. Keep it focused on the rubber stamp Republican Congress,” Emanuel emphasized. “You have to win independents 2 to 1 to win the House. They are uncomfortable with Donald Trump and they’re uncomfortable that nobody from the Roberts court, to the press and media, to the Republican Congress are putting a checkmate on him.”
