Historic Change in Virginia as Democrats Gain Full Control of the State Government
For the first time since 2021, Virginia’s political landscape has shifted significantly as Democrats now fully control the state government. With the departure of Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin, Democrat Abigail Spanberger has been inaugurated as the new governor, marking a historical milestone as the first woman to hold the state’s highest office.
During the recent elections, Democrats secured a dominant position by capturing 64 out of the 100 seats available in the House of Delegates. Furthermore, the party previously won control of the Virginia Senate in the 2023 elections, securing 21 out of 40 seats.
With this consolidated power, Virginia Democrats have quickly begun to push for a progressive legislative agenda. However, the ultimate decision on much of the proposed legislation will rest with the voters. This year, four major constitutional amendments, approved by the Virginia Legislature, will be presented to the public for a vote.
