Rev. Frederick Douglass Haynes III Enters Congressional Race as Rep. Jasmine Crockett Pursues Senate
In a significant political development, Rev. Frederick Douglass Haynes III has declared his intention to run for the congressional seat of District 30 in Texas. This announcement follows Rep. Jasmine Crockett’s decision to campaign for the U.S. Senate, creating a vacancy in the district Haynes aims to fill.
Haynes, the senior pastor of the prominent Friendship-West Baptist Church in Dallas, made the declaration on Monday. The announcement came right after a sermon he delivered that was critical of President Donald Trump and the U.S. Supreme Court. The sermon was attended by Crockett, for whom Haynes later prayed, asking for divine protection and courage as she moves forward with her Senate bid.
During the service, Haynes praised Crockett’s political stance. “She’s Jasmine putting injustice in jeopardy. She’s Jasmine. She’s cool. She’s calm, collected, and a Crockett,” he stated, describing her as “the nation’s congresswoman.”
The Friendship-West Baptist Church has yet to issue an official comment regarding Haynes’ political ambitions. However, in his address, Haynes expressed a desire for societal change, urging his congregation to be “energized to break out in a movement that makes a difference” by challenging the current political climate.
Haynes questioned, “Are you tired yet? Are you tired of an authoritarian president who’s been given carte blanche by the Supreme Court? And the Supreme Court decided this week that racist redistricting in Texas is actually legal. And so the law is on the side of injustice. Is anybody tired yet?”
He further articulated frustrations about the current state of the nation. “Is anybody tired of immigrants being indicted by way of their character?” he asked, referencing President Trump’s recent remarks about Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., whom he labeled as “garbage.” Haynes criticized the rhetoric coming from the White House and highlighted his concerns over wealth disparities, systemic racism, and the healthcare system.
His decision to run for Congress comes shortly after a brief medical leave from his pastoral duties, which began around three months ago due to an undisclosed medical condition. Despite this, Haynes appears committed to advocating for change, drawing attention to issues such as the criminal justice system and healthcare disparities affecting African Americans.
As Crockett campaigns for the Senate, her political journey has not been without challenges. While she enjoys support from progressive circles, she has faced controversies, including allegations related to her official conduct, such as utilizing a taxpayer-funded police escort to bypass airport security and accusations of creating a toxic work environment. Furthermore, financial scrutiny has arisen over her campaign expenditures, with records revealing significant spending on luxury travel and accommodations.
