Socioeconomic Factors Leave Mark on Preteen Brain Development, Study Reveals
A recent scientific investigation sheds light on how a child’s neighborhood socioeconomic conditions can imprint distinctive patterns in their brain. This groundbreaking study, published in the journal Science, underscores the crucial role of socioeconomic opportunities in shaping young minds.
In an extensive analysis involving over 2,300 children aged 9 and 10, researchers identified a correlation between environmental factors—such as household income, education, and neighborhood quality—and variations in brain structure, which are evident in MRI scans. The study further discovered that preteens residing in lower-income areas with limited social support exhibited brain differences linked to increased stress and reduced sleep.
“Something is going on in these neighborhoods,” remarked Scott Marek, the study’s lead author and assistant professor of radiology at WashU School of Medicine. “We need to find out how socioeconomics is becoming biologically embedded.”
Expert opinions support these findings. Russell Poldrack, a psychology professor at Stanford University, emphasized the significant impact of one’s environment on brain development. The study challenges past research that primarily linked brain development with IQ and mental health.
While factors like IQ and mental health have a minor influence, socioeconomic conditions emerged as the dominant variable. “But socioeconomics was, by a wide margin, absolutely the dominant variable,” stated Dr. Nico Dosenbach, a co-author of the study and professor at WashU Medicine.
These revelations suggest that previous studies connecting cognitive performance to brain variations may need reevaluation, according to Dr. Theodore D. Satterthwaite from the University of Pennsylvania. He co-authored a perspective piece accompanying the study and noted that earlier research often overlooked the socioeconomic variable, which could alter or invalidate previous conclusions.
Analyzing Brain Development with Comprehensive Data
The research aimed to provide an unbiased perspective on brain development by considering all possible influencing factors. Utilizing data from the federally funded Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study, the team examined brain scans to identify structural and communicative differences. They then correlated these differences with various environmental, cognitive, and mental health factors.
The study revealed that nearly all top-ranked factors influencing brain differences were linked to socioeconomic opportunities. These factors primarily affected regions of the brain responsible for sensory processing and motor control, rather than higher cognitive functions.
The researchers found that economic, educational, and social opportunities—or the lack thereof—were associated with factors like reduced sleep, heightened stress, and increased social media usage, which in turn altered brain circuits responsible for wakefulness and alertness.
While the study does not conclusively prove causation between these factors and brain differences, Marek asserted, “But the data are screaming that we should be looking at sleep, stress and screens if we want to get somewhere.”
