St Andrew’s Jarrom Street Church: Resilience After Devastating Fire

After enduring a destructive fire on 28 July, St Andrew’s Jarrom Street Church in Leicester has reopened its doors for services. The incident, while deeply damaging to the church’s historic structure, resulted in no casualties or injuries.
Firefighters managed to salvage the remains of Tony Simons, a long-serving church warden, whose funeral was meant to occur at the church. The 160-year-old edifice, a Grade II listed building designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, suffered substantial damage, particularly to its roof, though its spire and rose window were largely spared.
The Victorian Society expressed its dismay over the destruction to the heritage site. On the night of the blaze, over 40 firefighters from seven stations responded to what is thought to have been an accidental fire.
In light of a current heatwave, Leicester Fire and Rescue Service has emphasized the increased risk of fire spread due to dry conditions, urging the public to exercise additional caution.
The church extended gratitude to the fire service for their “bravery” in handling the situation and retrieving Tony Simons’ body, honoring his 72 years of dedication to the church.
The church remarked, “As the late Tony Simons often said, ‘Keep the faith. Save the parish.’ We are greatly blessed that our church building has been home to a large, growing and diverse congregation, training eight organ scholars, hosting other Christian communities, and supporting the whole parish with spaces for music, art, lectures, and community events.”
Despite the destruction, the church emphasized that its essence goes beyond the physical structure. Church pastor Rev Johannes Arens shared, “The whole community is in shock, but we are discovering our own ‘Blitz Spirit’.”
“We will rebuild our beautiful church. I don’t yet know what funds we will need, but I am incredibly thankful to all those who are already coming forward to offer their help, prayers and donations,” he added.
