In the midst of unimaginable tragedy, a family’s unwavering faith has become a powerful testament to their beliefs. The devastating loss of a young groom just hours after his wedding has sparked a response from his parents that has left many in awe of their spiritual strength.
On Friday, May 29, 25-year-old Dave Fiji celebrated his marriage to Jesni at The Revere venue near Dawsonville, Georgia. The couple, who had first met at New Testament Church more than ten years earlier, exchanged vows in front of hundreds of guests in what witnesses described as a beautiful celebration of their love.
Tragedy strikes on what should have been the happiest day
The festivities concluded around 9:30 p.m., and the newlyweds prepared to depart for Peachtree-DeKalb Airport aboard a Robinson R66 helicopter. Weather conditions had deteriorated throughout the evening, with fog and rain reducing visibility significantly.
Dave, who worked as a Delta pilot, had expressed concerns about the conditions to his father, stating he would not personally fly in such limited visibility. Despite these concerns, the pilot received clearance to fly at a higher altitude and proceeded with the departure.
The aircraft went down in a densely forested area southwest of Dawsonville. Both Dave and pilot Nikhil Nargundkar lost their lives in the crash. Jesni, a nurse by profession, remained trapped beneath the wreckage and fallen trees for five agonizing hours.
When she regained consciousness, she discovered Dave lying on her chest. Drawing on her medical training, she reached out to check on him and called his name, only to realize he had already passed away.
A remarkable display of faith in the darkest hour
In the aftermath of this devastating loss, Dave’s parents, George and Pheba Fiji, have demonstrated a depth of faith that has resonated deeply with those around them. George described his son as “a precious child” and “a gift from God.”
Pheba shared a particularly moving observation about the wedding ceremony itself. “Both of them told us they could sense the presence of God at the altar,” she said. “A tangible presence of God. There was a special glow and glory over his face that we couldn’t explain. And it was not just us who noticed.”
In words that captured the essence of their faith during this difficult time, she added: “We have the confidence that God perfected the work that he started in his life.”
George reflected on the ceremony, calling it a perfect wedding and stating, “We couldn’t ask anything more.”
The path forward
Jesni is currently recovering from her physical injuries sustained in the crash. She has remembered her late husband as someone who embodied kindness, gentleness, and selflessness.
The National Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation into the incident, with weather conditions expected to be a significant factor in their inquiry.
The Fiji family and Jesni continue to navigate this profound loss, supported by their community and sustained by their faith.
