The Trump Administration’s Proposal for a $250 Bill Sparks Debate

As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, a novel proposal has emerged from the Trump administration: a $250 bill featuring the likeness of President Donald Trump. The move, however, hinges on Congressional approval due to existing legal restrictions.

Under current law, living presidents cannot be depicted on U.S. currency. Nevertheless, preparations are underway in anticipation that Congress might amend the legislation, allowing for this special edition bill. “It’s all in the hands of… Capitol Hill,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent remarked during a briefing at the White House. “We prepared things in advance… but we will stick to the law.”

Bessent expressed confidence that there is nothing inappropriate about featuring the current president on the bill, especially during such a significant milestone for the nation.

In 2026, GOP Representative Joe Wilson from South Carolina introduced a bill that mandates the Treasury to produce $250 notes adorned with Trump’s portrait. The legislation, however, remains unaddressed.

The Washington Post reported that the initiative was driven by two of Trump’s political appointees who advocated for the creation of the new note, complete with a mock-up of Trump’s image. During the White House press briefing, Bessent showcased the Post’s article detailing the proposal.

Should Congress amend the law, Trump would become the first living individual to appear on U.S. currency since 1866. This initiative aligns with a broader trend of the Trump administration leaving its mark on governmental symbols and institutions to celebrate the nation’s upcoming anniversary.

Earlier this year, the Treasury Department announced that Trump’s signature would be featured on all newly printed currency, diverging from the tradition of including only the signatures of the treasury secretary and the treasurer.

The potential $250 note is part of a series of commemorative efforts, including a proposed passport and national park passes bearing Trump’s image. Additionally, the president’s visage is prominently displayed on a banner above the Justice Department, and his name has been added to institutions like the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the U.S. Institute of Peace, reflecting Trump’s penchant for self-branding.
