In his distinguished career, Mackay served as Lord Chancellor under Prime Ministers Margaret Thatcher and John Major, from 1987 to 1997, where he implemented significant legal reforms. Before this, he was Scotland’s Lord Advocate and the Dean of the Faculty of Advocates.

Raised in the Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland, Mackay was an elder until 1988, when he faced suspension for attending Catholic funeral services, an act against his church’s rules. His stance on this issue eventually led to a schism within the denomination.
From Mathematics to Law
Born in Edinburgh in 1927, Mackay initially pursued mathematics before switching to law. His contributions to the field were recognized with his appointment as a Knight of the Thistle in 1997. He retired from the House of Lords in 2022.
