An Unnerving Evening at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner: A Shooting Incident Unfolds

The tranquil atmosphere of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner was abruptly shattered when gunfire erupted, causing panic among attendees. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were present at the event in Washington, D.C., where a shooting incident took place. Fortunately, both were unharmed, and a suspect has been taken into custody, according to the U.S. Secret Service.

“The U.S. Secret Service, in coordination with the Metropolitan Police Department, is investigating a shooting incident near the main magnetometer screening area at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner,” read the official statement from the Secret Service. “The president and first lady are safe along [with] all protectees.”

The sound of gunshots was reported by journalists around 8:30 p.m. ET at the Washington Hilton, leading to a chaotic scene as attendees, including top government officials and politicians, scrambled for safety. President Trump later announced plans to brief the press on the matter.

Video footage captured during the incident shows security swiftly moving the president and first lady off the main stage, with shouts of “stay down” echoing in the background. President Trump expressed his gratitude for the quick response of the Secret Service via social media, stating, “Quite an evening in D.C. Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely. The shooter has been apprehended.”

Law enforcement officials were seen escorting key cabinet members to safer locations within the hotel, including EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, Health Secretary Robert Kennedy, and FBI Director Kash Patel. President Trump later confirmed that all cabinet members were safe.

Several members of Congress, including Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse and Rep. Jared Moskowitz, were spotted leaving the event on foot. The president of the correspondents’ association, Weijia Jiang, addressed the crowd, emphasizing the importance of journalism and the First Amendment during such crises.

This shooting incident is not the first time President Trump has faced violence. In 2024, he was injured at a Pennsylvania rally when a bullet grazed his ear, and in another incident, a man with a rifle was apprehended near Trump’s property in West Palm Beach.
