Trump Proposes Temporary Gas Tax Suspension Amid Ongoing Conflict

In an effort to alleviate the financial burden on Americans, President Trump has proposed a temporary halt to the federal gas tax as the conflict in Iran, now in its 11th week, continues to push oil prices upward.

During a CBS News interview, Trump suggested that the gas tax be paused “for a period of time” and reintroduced once gas prices decline.

Later, when questioned in the Oval Office regarding the duration of the suspension, the president stated it would last “till it’s appropriate.”

Suspending the gas tax, currently set at 18.4 cents per gallon for gasoline and 24.4 cents for diesel, would require legislative action from Congress. More information on this can be found here.

Prior to the U.S. military action in Iran, the average price for regular gasoline was just under $3 per gallon. This has since escalated to $4.52 per gallon, representing a more than 50% increase, according to AAA.

A suspension of the gas tax could potentially lower the average cost of gasoline by approximately 4%, offering a $2.21 saving on a 12-gallon tank.

The Iran war has led to blockades that impede oil tankers from navigating the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for about 20% of the world’s crude oil, contributing to the surge in gas prices.

The potential tax suspension highlights the administration’s recognition of the economic strain on Americans, with a recent NPR/PBS News/Marist poll indicating that 80% of Americans feel the impact of high gas prices on their budgets.

Furthermore, the poll reveals that 63% of Americans hold Trump substantially accountable for the increased gas prices, including a significant portion of independents and a notable segment of Republicans.
