Highland Park Presbyterian Church recently embarked on an inspiring three-week teaching series titled “Building Blocks.” This series aims to remind the congregation of the foundational aspects of being a Christian, a follower of Jesus, and a part of the church. As the church community steps into a new chapter, the series encourages members to start from a common understanding of God’s intentions for their future.

In the first week, the focus was on the early church in Acts 2, highlighting how the first Christians practiced four key habits: devotion to the apostles’ teachings, intimate fellowship, prayer, and extravagant generosity. These habits were not pursued in isolation but were practiced collectively, fostering a vibrant community where faith could flourish.

Intimate Fellowship: The Second Building Block

This week, the sermon delves into the second habit: intimate fellowship. The pastor acknowledges the crisis of loneliness that plagues our modern world. Despite living in more urbanized environments than ever before, people are experiencing unprecedented levels of loneliness. This paradox affects not only individuals but also future generations.

The pastor referenced the Harvard Study of Adult Development, which has spanned over 85 years and three generations. The study reveals that good relationships are the cornerstone of health and happiness. Dr. Robert Waldinger, the current director of the study, emphasizes that relationships help manage stress and are essential for overcoming life’s challenges. As he succinctly puts it, “Really, what you need is somebody in your life who you can call on.”

The early church understood the importance of such relationships. They shared meals and lives, going beyond surface-level interactions. The book of Job offers a poignant example of intimate fellowship. Job’s friends, despite their flawed advice later, initially demonstrated profound companionship by sitting with him in silence during his suffering. Their presence, though imperfect, exemplified the kind of community God desires for us.

Lessons from Job’s Friends

Job’s story serves as a reminder that while friends may not always have the right words, their presence is invaluable. The pastor challenges us to consider whether we have friends who would drop everything to be with us in times of need. Conversely, are we willing to be there for others? The sermon calls us to embrace vulnerability and honesty, allowing others to see our true selves, just as Job did.

The pastor shared a personal anecdote about his father’s battle with a terminal illness, pulmonary fibrosis. During this challenging time, the pastor experienced the power of community when friends showed up unexpectedly at his father’s funeral, offering comfort and solidarity. This act of kindness underscored the importance of letting people into our lives, even when it feels uncomfortable.

A Call to Action

As Highland Park Presbyterian Church continues to grow, the pastor emphasizes the need for smaller, meaningful connections within the congregation. He urges everyone to cultivate relationships that mirror the early church’s practices. This involves being open, sharing our struggles, and supporting one another in prayer and friendship.

The sermon concludes with an invitation to engage actively with the community. Church members are encouraged to join community groups, mentorship programs, or prayer gatherings. By choosing to live in fellowship, they can break free from the cycle of loneliness and experience the transformative power of God’s love.

As the service draws to a close, the pastor invites the congregation to stand, pray, and share their burdens with one another. In doing so, they embrace the opportunity to live differently, choosing the path of intimate fellowship that leads to true flourishing.
