At Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church, a spirit of community and divine connection fills the sanctuary, inviting all who enter to embrace the presence of God. This week, the church congregation gathered to reflect on the theme of “abundance,” a concept beautifully woven throughout the service, from heartfelt prayers to joyful songs of praise.

The sermon began with a reminder of Psalm 23, “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want,” setting the tone for a message centered around God’s unwavering provision and love. The pastor, celebrating his 10th anniversary at the church, shared a personal reflection, noting how quickly a decade had passed and expressing gratitude for the journey of faith and fellowship experienced with the congregation.

The children’s sermon brought a touch of simplicity and clarity to the theme of abundance. The children were reminded of Jesus’ words, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth,” emphasizing that true treasure lies in God’s love, which is imperishable and beyond theft or decay. Through the story of manna provided to the Israelites in the desert, the children learned about the importance of trusting God for daily needs and sharing with others.

Psalm 36:7-8 was a focal scripture for the sermon, with its declaration of God’s unfailing love and the abundance found in His house. The pastor encouraged the congregation to feast on this abundance, to drink from the river of delights, and to recognize the overflowing grace that God offers. “Abundance is not about scarcity,” he said, “it’s about seeing what is already there, the grace and gifts often overlooked.”

In a poignant anecdote, the pastor recounted a friend’s story about tallying moments of “just my luck” against unacknowledged blessings. This exercise revealed more moments of grace than of frustration, highlighting how often abundance goes unnoticed. He challenged the congregation to keep an “abundance journal” for six weeks, urging them to take note of the small, everyday moments of grace and joy.

The sermon also acknowledged those going through difficult times, reassuring them that God’s abundance can be found even in darkness and pain. The pastor shared personal experiences of unexpected kindness and support that had sustained him through challenging times, illustrating that abundance often requires letting go of expectations to receive God’s gifts in unexpected forms.

Drawing the service to a close, the pastor invited everyone to partake in communion, describing it as a “table of abundance” where Jesus’ love is the main course. As the congregation approached the table, they were reminded of Jesus’ promise: “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.”

Throughout the service, the church community was called to action—to live abundantly, to give generously, and to trust in God’s provision. As the congregation left the sanctuary, they were encouraged to continue reflecting on abundance, both in their personal lives and within the community, nurturing a spirit of gratitude and sharing the overflowing love of God with others.
