At Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church, a community that cherishes belonging to God and one another, the sermon on World Communion Sunday focused on the transformative power of the Holy Spirit, or the “Paraclete,” as referred to in the Gospel of John. This sermon invited us to explore the profound ways the Spirit inspires us to transcend our limitations and embrace a life of faith guided by courage and compassion.

The term “Paraclete” comes from the Greek words “para,” meaning “alongside,” and “kalein,” meaning “to call.” It captures the essence of the Holy Spirit as a comforting presence that walks beside us, offering strength and advocacy. The pastor shared that this concept is particularly emphasized in John 14:16, where Jesus promises to send another advocate to be with us forever. This assurance of divine companionship is a cornerstone of faith, providing believers the capacity to see beyond their human limitations.

One powerful illustration shared during the sermon involved a story about reconciliation and forgiveness. The speaker recounted the true story of Tom Tarrants, a man who once harbored extremist views and acted violently, but through a transformative encounter with faith and the writings of C.S. Lewis, found redemption. This story culminated in a moment of profound reconciliation with Stan Chasson, a man who had been a victim of Tom’s earlier actions. Their encounter, described as a “miracle at Spring Hill,” exemplified the Spirit’s ability to create a “third way” beyond entrenched binaries of guilt and innocence, leading to healing and new beginnings.

This notion of a “third way” was further explored through the teachings of Richard Rohr, who emphasized that the Holy Spirit provides a path beyond binary thinking. Whether we are caught in personal conflicts, political divides, or deep-seated prejudices, the Spirit invites us to seek a path of unity and belonging that transcends our divisions.

Throughout the sermon, the congregation was encouraged to reflect on areas in their lives where they might feel stuck and to remain open to the Spirit’s guidance towards new possibilities. As we gathered for communion, it was a reminder that the table is open to all, celebrating our shared identity in Christ and the Spirit’s work in bringing us together as one body.

As the church embarks on its stewardship campaign, the message of belonging and transformation remains central. The theme “Rooted in Wisdom, Growing in Faith” calls the community to continue its mission with hope and generosity, trusting in the Spirit’s presence to guide and sustain them.

In closing, the pastor’s words resonated: “The Spirit is here. The Spirit is always calling us to a third way. The Spirit is always ready for a miracle. Are you ready?” This question invites us all to embrace the Spirit’s transformative power in our lives, emboldening us to become vessels of love and reconciliation in our world.
