Highland Park Presbyterian Church stands as a beacon of faith, striving to lead all generations to discover and follow Jesus, promoting the flourishing of their city and beyond. In a recent sermon, the congregation gathered to reflect on the themes of hope, redemption, and the enduring goodness of God, as shared through the story of Ruth and the overarching narrative of Jesus Christ.

Pastor Emily Skates opened the service by welcoming everyone, especially newcomers, to this special All Saints Sunday. This day is dedicated to remembering the brothers and sisters in Christ who have passed on and are now with the Lord. Pastor Emily encouraged the congregation to reflect on the lives of these faithful individuals and to live out their own faith with the same devotion. The service began with a proclamation of hope through the Heidelberg Catechism, reminding everyone that their only comfort in life and death is belonging to their faithful Savior, Jesus Christ.

Guest preacher Jerry Sittser, a theology professor emeritus, shared an engaging sermon centered around the story of Ruth, highlighting how God’s goodness unfolds through the narratives of our lives. He began with Psalm 100:5, “For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.” Jerry reflected on how he had chosen to believe in these words, despite life’s challenges.

The story of Ruth, set during the dark times of the Book of Judges, tells of Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz. Naomi, after losing her husband and sons, returns to Bethlehem with Ruth, her devoted Moabite daughter-in-law. Ruth’s loyalty and faith in a God she barely knew led her to glean in the fields of Boaz, a relative of Naomi, who would later become her husband and kinsman-redeemer. Jerry emphasized how Ruth’s story, a small tale of personal sacrifice and faithfulness, became part of a larger narrative leading to King David and ultimately, Jesus Christ.

Jerry’s personal anecdotes, including his experiences of loss and redemption, illustrated how life’s stories can be both challenging and beautiful. He shared a poignant moment from his life, attending a symphony concert and reflecting on 53 years of his own story, filled with both tragedy and joy. He encouraged the congregation to consider whether they would let singular events define them or embrace the unfolding story of God’s goodness.

He concluded by urging the congregation to step into God’s story and stay there, trusting that its conclusion will be breathtakingly and eternally wonderful. The narrative of Ruth reminds us that even the most ordinary lives can have extraordinary impacts when woven into God’s grand design.

The service continued with the celebration of communion, a reminder of the ultimate story of God’s love demonstrated through Jesus Christ’s sacrifice. The congregation was invited to partake in the Lord’s Supper, reflecting on the unity and redemption offered through Christ. Pastor Emily and the prayer team were available for personal prayer and reflection.

As the service drew to a close, the congregation was encouraged to participate in the upcoming election as part of their civic duty, with the church opening for prayer throughout the day. Pastor Emily reminded everyone of their ultimate allegiance to King Jesus, before closing with a benediction, “May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you now and forevermore. Amen.”
