In a significant move addressing alleged rampant fraud in Minnesota, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt declared on Wednesday that the Trump administration has engaged in a comprehensive crackdown, already issuing over 1,700 subpoenas. Leavitt’s statements emphasize a robust federal response to fraud accusations in the state.

Describing the situation in Minnesota as “remarkable” and “egregious,” Leavitt outlined the government’s efforts during the year’s first White House briefing. This announcement coincided with reports of a tragic incident in Minneapolis involving immigration enforcement officers, which further intensified the day’s events.

Federal agents and administration officials are actively stationed in Minnesota to investigate fraud claims. “[DHS] Secretary Noem was there yesterday,” Leavitt noted. “[Treasury] Secretary Bessent [is] traveling there later this week to talk about the fraud and to do a roundtable on this very topic.”

The U.S. Department of Justice has charged 98 individuals in Minnesota, with 85 being of Somali descent and 64 already convicted. Leavitt shared that the DOJ has significantly ramped up its efforts, executing over 130 search warrants and deploying additional attorneys to manage the case influx.

The Department of Homeland Security has dispatched around 2,000 agents to Minneapolis, conducting extensive investigations and bolstering both criminal and immigration enforcement efforts.

In response to the fraud allegations, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has frozen approximately $185 million in federal childcare payments to the state. This action has prompted new national policies requiring justification and evidence for payments, as detailed by the Christian Post.

The U.S. Departments of Labor, Agriculture, and Small Business Administration are also actively working to address and prevent fraud.

“Rest assured, this is an all-hands-on-deck effort from the entire administration,” Leavitt affirmed. The aim is to safeguard taxpayer interests and ensure justice across the nation wherever fraud is detected.

Press Secretary Leavitt’s comments followed Democratic Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s recent announcement that he will not seek reelection. This decision comes amid criticism of his administration’s handling of alleged fraud in childcare centers operated by Somali immigrants.

Viral investigations by journalist Nick Shirley have brought attention to potential fraudulent activities in other states, prompting further inquiries in cities like Seattle, Washington and Columbus, Ohio.

Leavitt speculated Walz’s withdrawal was due to eroding support within his state, marking a significant shift from his position as a former vice-presidential nominee for the Democratic Party.

The situation in Minneapolis is further complicated by the fatal shooting of a woman by law enforcement. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey vocally criticized ICE’s presence in the city, urging them to leave: “get the f— out” following the incident. DHS defended the ICE agent, citing self-defense after an alleged vehicular assault attempt by the woman.

Governor Walz accused the DHS of “propaganda” and committed to a thorough investigation to ensure justice, as stated in his statement.
