This shift marks a significant change in how this demographic engages with spiritual matters, often seeking AI’s input before consulting traditional church figures like pastors or elders.
As AI becomes an integral part of daily life, especially for those who have grown up in a digital environment, it serves less as a tool and more as a conversational partner. This trend has prompted discussions among Korean theological scholars about its impact on faith development and pastoral care, as reported by Christian Daily Korea.
“Behind this phenomenon of young people turning to AI first lies ‘the cost of relationships’ and ‘fear of uncertainty,'” explained Choi Gwang-jin, head chaplain of Hoseo University and former president of the Korean Society of Systematic Theology.
Choi elaborated that conversations with other people often involve emotional management and social navigation, which can deter young believers from seeking advice from their community. AI, on the other hand, offers a risk-free interaction without judgment.
Why AI Wins the First Conversation
Choi pointed out that books also pose challenges, as they require patience and engagement with the author’s logic. In contrast, AI can quickly tailor responses to specific questions, making it an attractive option for young people seeking personalized and immediate answers.
This generation’s comfort with AI stems from its ability to serve as a personal assistant rather than just a reference tool. The absence of social risk makes AI an appealing choice for discussing spiritual struggles, areas where vulnerability is high.
What AI Cannot Do
Despite AI’s advantages, Choi emphasized its limitations. “AI can present answers to questions, but it cannot fill the meaning of life,” he said. While AI offers a wealth of knowledge, it lacks the warmth and quality of human interaction.
Choi believes that young people still value human connection, but are wary due to past relational wounds. He argues that a genuine, accepting community can draw them back to human relationships.
He identifies three qualities in a person that young adults seek: attentive listening, honesty about failures, and flexibility in communication. According to Choi, these attributes can foster trust and respect from younger believers.
A Tool, Not a Judge
Lee Seung-gu, a professor at Hapdong Theological Seminary, highlighted that the problem is not using AI, but rather treating it as the ultimate authority. “Multiple experts have consistently pointed out that AI can provide a fairly high level of response on general topics, but errors can appear on specific and detailed matters,” Lee said.
He advocates for using AI as one reference among many, including books and expert opinions, to ensure a balanced approach to decision-making.
The Threat to Contemplation
Seo Chang-won, chairman of the Korean Reformed Preaching Institute, raised concerns about AI’s impact on deep faith formation across all ages. He warned that easy access to information might weaken the practice of deep thinking and reflection, essential for true spiritual growth.
Seo cautioned that reliance on quick information could lead to passive Christians, who lack the grounding of a sustained relationship with Scripture and God. He also noted that this trend might pressure church leaders to deliver sermons that prioritize immediate engagement over deeper spiritual exploration.
