A young mother from Roselle, New Jersey, experienced an extraordinary moment when her rare identical twins were delivered holding onto each other in a tender embrace. The remarkable birth occurred after 22-year-old Shedeline Pierre Louis navigated one of the riskiest types of pregnancies known to medicine.
Pierre Louis, a certified nursing assistant expecting her first child, learned she was carrying monochorionic-monoamniotic twins, commonly referred to as MoMo twins. This extremely uncommon condition occurs in approximately 1 in every 10,000 pregnancies, where both babies develop within a single placenta and share the same amniotic sac.
Understanding the high-risk pregnancy
The shared environment presents serious complications for MoMo twins. The umbilical cords of both babies can become entangled, creating potentially fatal situations for one or both infants. Due to these significant dangers, medical professionals at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center admitted Pierre Louis for close monitoring when she reached 26 weeks of pregnancy.
An unforgettable delivery
On May 26, physicians performed a cesarean section at 32 weeks gestation after observing that one twin’s growth had slowed. What happened next left the entire operating room staff astonished. Dr. Alexander Juusela, who performed the delivery, witnessed the baby girls clinging to each other as they emerged.
The twins maintained their grip even as medical staff worked to separate them. “Even after we broke the water, they didn’t want to let each other go,” Dr. Juusela said. “So it was very cute.”
Recovery and homecoming
The newborns, named Shednhee and Claydee, required medical intervention including lung steroids and oxygen support. They remained in the NICU for nearly two months. During this challenging period, Pierre Louis struggled with being separated from her daughters. “When I don’t see them, I’m like, am I even a mom,” she told the hospital.
On July 23, hospital staff organized a celebratory clap-out event as the family prepared to take the twins home. Pierre Louis expressed her aspirations for her daughters’ future. “I want them to be respectful to adults, to everyone,” she says. “And then I want them to believe in God, just like I believe in God.”
Throughout the ordeal, the young mother relied heavily on her faith. “I put God first and then the doctors,” Pierre Louis shared, demonstrating her approach to managing the high-risk pregnancy with spiritual strength alongside medical care.
