When Nathan Schloegl’s newborn son required urgent medical care in December 2022, the former Coast Guard member had no idea he was standing at the threshold of a complete life transformation. The experience of watching medical professionals care for his vulnerable infant would spark a career change so dramatic that within weeks, this tattooed ex-military and private security professional would be enrolled in nursing school.

Schloegl’s journey began at Corewell Health Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where his son Luca arrived and immediately needed respiratory assistance. As a new father facing the intimidating world of neonatal intensive care, Schloegl felt overwhelmed by circumstances he didn’t understand.

Confronting the unknown

“I really honestly didn’t know what NICU was,” he told TODAY’s Sheinelle Jones during a May 8 appearance. His anxiety manifested in unexpected ways as he kept constant watch over his newborn. “I had this really irrational fear that he was going to get mixed up or lost,” he said.

During those uncertain hours, a particular nurse made all the difference. Her approach cut through his confusion and fear with remarkable effectiveness. “She kept it so simple for me,” Schloegl recalled. “Her calm, confident demeanor, it was what I needed at that moment.”

Six days that changed everything

Throughout Luca’s six-day NICU stay, Schloegl observed the dedicated care his family received from the nursing staff. Their compassion and expertise during his family’s crisis planted seeds for a dramatic career pivot that he couldn’t have anticipated.

The timeline of what happened next demonstrates remarkable decisiveness. Luca left the hospital on December 19, 2022. By the second week of January, Schloegl had enrolled in community college to pursue nursing.

“I had no interest at all in nursing whatsoever,” he admitted. Yet something undeniable drove him forward. “I just went all in. That experience was enough for me to see the impact that nurses make,” he said.

Balancing education and family

The decision to return to school came with significant challenges. Schloegl navigated his nursing education while he and his wife Lindsey cared for their newborn son and their two teenage daughters—a demanding juggling act that required dedication from the entire family.

After completing his nursing degree in December 2025, Schloegl returned to work in the exact NICU unit where Luca had been treated. He now works overnight shifts from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., walking past the location where his son’s bed once stood.

An unexpected advantage

Schloegl acknowledges that his appearance—covered in tattoos and bearing little resemblance to traditional nursing stereotypes—sets him apart from many of his colleagues. However, this difference has become one of his greatest assets when connecting with fathers experiencing the same fear he once felt.

“Just because we’re able to connect on a guy-to-guy level,” he explained, describing how his background helps him relate to overwhelmed dads in ways that comfort them during their families’ medical crises.

Full circle gratitude

The impact of Schloegl’s work was highlighted during his TODAY show appearance when first-time parents Hannah and Logan sent a video message expressing appreciation for his care of their twin boys. They specifically mentioned how he ensured they had meaningful skin-to-skin contact with their infants.

“The best part for me,” Schloegl said, “is being able to connect with those parents and try to give back what was given to me in that moment.”

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” — Ephesians 2:10

Schloegl’s transformation from terrified parent to compassionate caregiver illustrates how life’s most challenging moments can reveal unexpected paths forward. Every night he reports for duty, he steps into a role that emerged from his family’s vulnerability—now using that experience to guide other families through their own frightening journeys.
