Amid the lively campus atmosphere as students return for a new academic year, there’s an additional thrill in the air. This buzz is not just from new classes or social gatherings, but from the commencement of an exciting competition: the NPR College Podcast Challenge.
Indeed, it’s that season again for the NPR College Podcast Challenge.
Students from various colleges across the nation are preparing to compete for the prestigious $5,000 grand prize, awarded to the creator of the best college podcast in the United States. Finalists will also be granted a $500 scholarship.
Now in its sixth year, this competition has seen participation from thousands of students representing campuses in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
This challenge has showcased an array of captivating stories, ranging from personal tales and sound-rich explorations to impactful journalism on issues pertinent to students.
The winners and finalists have come from diverse academic backgrounds and institutions.
The College Podcast Challenge stems from the NPR Student Podcast Challenge, which started in 2018 for grades 4-12 students. This year, it introduces something novel: the Senior Podcast Challenge for participants aged 65 and above.
How it works
The competition rules are mostly unchanged: Submit your audio story, not exceeding eight minutes, and ensure it is free from copyrighted music – check our rules page for detailed guidelines.
Each year, many entries are disqualified for not adhering to these fundamental rules.

Recent years have shown significant improvements in sound production and storytelling quality. Students appear more comfortable speaking into microphones, and their editing and producing skills have notably advanced.
However, not all trends are positive:
While sound effects are enjoyable, they should be used sparingly. Excessive use can detract from the story. Less is more when it comes to sound effects.
Similar caution applies to music, or “scoring.” Simply because music can be added throughout a podcast does not mean it should be. Often, it breaches rules regarding original, non-copyrighted music use.
Loud or constant background music can distract from the narrative. Details here explain how to “score” your podcast selectively, and a guide here on improving audio recordings.
Lastly, since selected podcasts will air on NPR, participants should adhere to the network’s journalism principles and ethics. Crucially, AI should not be used to create or produce any podcast components.
