In a vibrant celebration of nature and art, over 11,000 visitors flocked to Winchester Cathedral and its grounds over five days for a captivating flower festival.
Spanning from 5 to 10 September, the festival, titled Wild!, featured a variety of performances, workshops, and talks, all nestled amidst breathtaking floral displays.
Chris Palmer, Dean of Winchester, expressed to The Hampshire Chronicle, “Wild! filled the cathedral with beauty while inviting us to think more deeply about our relationship with the natural world.”
He emphasized the festival’s success in demonstrating how “spectacular floral design can celebrate nature while also treating it with care.”
The event was made possible by the collaboration of over 50 clubs, cathedral staff, and numerous local volunteers.
The festival aimed to encourage reflection on environmental care and hoped to allocate some of the proceeds towards conserving the historic cathedral, which has stood for nearly a millennium.
The opening day alone saw thousands of attendees, according to cathedral reports.
Christina Rodwell, head of visitor growth at the cathedral, highlighted the positive reception, stating, “The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with people telling us the themes feel impactful, creative and expressive.”
She noted how the exhibits “spill and flow through the cathedral in a way that feels natural and immersive, inviting visitors to see the natural world in a new way.”
Visitor Andrew David remarked on the uniqueness of the event, describing it as “unlike” any other flower event he had attended.
He shared, “I was able to walk under, around and between the installations, which made me feel part of the experience, rather than just looking at it.”
