When a Mississippi grandmother suddenly lost consciousness in her Southaven home, the only person there to help was her three-year-old grandson. What happened next demonstrates how technology in the hands of even the youngest family members can become a lifesaving tool in an emergency.

Ky’ier was spending time with his grandmother, whom he calls “Poopie,” when she unexpectedly collapsed. His grandfather Jarvis Shipp had just received a call from his wife mentioning she felt unwell, but she passed out before he could return home. Left alone with his unconscious grandmother, the toddler didn’t panic.

A toddler’s quick response

Instead of freezing in fear, Ky’ier picked up his iPad and managed to contact emergency services. “I called my mommy and said, ‘My Poopie passed out, my Poopie passed out,'” Ky’ier recalled. The three-year-old successfully connected with 911 dispatch and remained on the line throughout the emergency, providing information about his grandmother’s condition.

The boy positioned himself at the front door, where he could both watch his grandmother and look out for arriving paramedics. His communication with dispatchers was clear enough that they maintained contact with him while also reaching out to other family members. “They said they were going to call me back in case they could not get back with him, so I guess they got back with him,” Shipp said.

Mystery behind the child’s knowledge

His mother, Jhakiya Montgomery, remains puzzled about how her son knew to dial 911 or understood how to describe a medical emergency. She expressed deep pride in how he assisted first responders throughout the incident. When emergency personnel arrived at the residence, Ky’ier’s reaction surprised everyone.

“When he saw them, he yelled, ‘Come on, doctors, come on doctors, help my granny, help my granny,'” Montgomery stated.

Emergency medical technicians transported the grandmother to a local hospital where she received treatment. She has since been discharged and is recovering at home with Ky’ier staying close by her side.

A grandfather’s changed perspective

The incident has shifted how at least one family member views children’s access to devices. “I don’t like those tablets and them being with the phone, but in this situation, it was very helpful,” Jarvis admitted. While the iPad typically serves as entertainment for the young boy, his family now recognizes the potential benefits of having such technology accessible during emergencies.

The family credits divine intervention for guiding their youngest member through such a frightening situation. Though Ky’ier primarily uses his device for games and videos, his ability to navigate it during a crisis proved invaluable to his grandmother’s survival.
