In a compelling discussion on technology’s future, the Archbishop of Canterbury and Pope Leo XIV have underscored the importance of ensuring that artificial intelligence (AI) remains a tool for human benefit rather than a substitute for human capabilities.
Sarah Mullally, speaking in the House of Lords, lauded AI as “a remarkable product of human creativity,” highlighting its potential across various fields. Despite these advancements, she expressed concerns that the rapid pace of technological development might outstrip human readiness to ethically and philosophically manage these changes.
The Pope, in a recent encyclical, emphasized the need for AI to support, not replace, humanity, cautioning against its use in military contexts. He noted that AI could speed up conflicts and depersonalize warfare, lowering the barriers to violence and turning defense strategies into predictive threats. Such developments, he argued, could lead to a desensitization to violence, needing only optimization.
Drawing on her background in nursing, Mullally pointed to AI’s role in enhancing safety in childbirth. However, she stressed that technology falls short in delivering the human touch, such as providing eye contact and emotional support, which are irreplaceable in healthcare settings.
Furthermore, Mullally raised concerns about the impact of AI on human relationships, specifically the reliance on chatbots during periods of loneliness. She highlighted disturbing trends where chatbots are used to simulate abusive scenarios, warning that this could “normalize and legitimize” such behaviors.
In her concluding remarks, Mullally advocated for a collective societal approach to integrating AI, emphasizing the need for technology to evolve alongside human values and objectives. She stated, “Technology this revolutionary must not simply be unleashed on our societies: it must be developed with us and for us – at a human pace, with human objectives.”
Both leaders stress the urgency of prioritizing humanity above profit and convenience, ensuring AI serves as a catalyst for a just and hopeful future for all.
