A chance encounter outside a Louisiana coffee shop on Good Friday morning became the catalyst for an unlikely bond between a generous young boy and a successful entrepreneur who didn’t look the part.
Matthew Busbice was sitting outside a Baton Rouge coffee shop, engaged in morning meditation and prayer, when 9-year-old Kelvin Ellis noticed him. The young boy, who had been raised with a compassionate heart for those less fortunate, assumed the man before him was experiencing homelessness.

A dollar and a question
Without hesitation, Kelvin walked up to Busbice with a simple question and an even simpler gift. “Excuse me sir, are you homeless? Because if you are, here’s a dollar,” Kelvin had asked.
The businessman, who happens to be a co-founder of Wildgame Innovations, was deeply moved by the child’s selfless act. Rather than dismissing the boy’s assumption, Busbice responded with equal generosity, explaining his situation but then inviting Kelvin and his father to join him for breakfast.
When appearances deceive
What Kelvin couldn’t have known was that the casually dressed man in front of him was actually a highly successful entrepreneur with considerable wealth. Yet Busbice’s financial status didn’t diminish his appreciation for the young boy’s compassionate gesture—in fact, it inspired him to respond in kind.
The breakfast invitation was only the beginning. Busbice later arranged a shopping spree for Kelvin, demonstrating that the encounter had touched him profoundly.
A vision for the future
Reflecting on the experience, Busbice shared his hopes for Kelvin’s generation. “This generation that’s coming up, if they’re more like Kelvin… they’re gonna give. They’re gonna be filled with joy, they’re gonna be happy, they’re gonna change the community, change the parish, change the state, change the world,” Matt affirmed.
The story serves as a powerful reminder that acts of kindness, regardless of how small they may seem, can create ripples far beyond what we can anticipate. Kelvin’s willingness to share what little he had with someone he thought needed it exemplifies the Biblical principle of caring for others.
The scripture from Matthew 25:40 resonates with this narrative: “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.“
This Good Friday meeting between a compassionate child and a humble millionaire demonstrates how generosity transcends economic boundaries and how divine appointments can occur in the most ordinary moments of our daily lives.
