FBI Investigation into Georgia’s 2020 Election Unveils Controversy
A recent FBI probe into the 2020 election process in Georgia’s Fulton County has drawn significant attention, particularly because of its origins linked to a lawyer associated with former President Trump’s administration. This investigation is rooted in an affidavit unsealed on Tuesday.
The affidavit, prepared by FBI Special Agent Hugh Raymond Evans, was pivotal in obtaining a judicial agreement for a search warrant executed on January 28. This operation led to the seizure of over 650 boxes of ballots and related election materials from Fulton County’s election headquarters.
Despite the thorough recounting of ballots three times with consistent results, the affidavit cites claims about the 2020 election that have been previously discredited. The investigation is described as a criminal inquiry into potential intentional misconduct violating federal laws.
The affidavit highlights the involvement of Kurt Olsen, a Director of Election Security and Integrity appointed by Trump, whose role in contesting the 2020 election results in Georgia and other states is well-documented.
While the White House did not respond to inquiries regarding Olsen’s involvement, the investigation focuses on five alleged election deficiencies. However, many of these claims have been debunked by state officials, including allegations about missing scanned images of ballots, which were not required by law to be retained at the time.
Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, who resisted Trump’s attempts to overturn the election results, criticized the investigation. He stated, “As Secretary of State, I’ve made Georgia the safest and most secure place to vote. Instead of wasting time and tax dollars trying to change the past with baseless and repackaged claims, let’s focus our efforts on building a safer, more affordable future for all hardworking Georgians.”
David Becker, executive director of the Center for Election Information & Research, expressed skepticism about the strength of the affidavit. He commented, “After more than five years, dozens of court cases, and over a year in total control of the federal government, this is all they’ve got? If taken at its word, this entire affidavit at most alleges human error after a late night during a global pandemic, all of which had no impact on the outcome of the race.”
The affidavit notably omits any reference to foreign election interference, despite the presence of Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard at the search site. In a recent letter to Democratic lawmakers, Gabbard defended her involvement in election security efforts and mentioned facilitating a call for Trump to thank the FBI agents. This call was reported by The New York Times.
Despite the ongoing investigations, Trump and his supporters continue to challenge the 2020 election outcomes, advocating for federal control over future elections. This includes efforts such as suing states for voter rolls and proposing that the GOP “nationalize” elections.
