In a recent legal examination, it was determined that Jonathan Fletcher, a former minister at Emmanuel Church Wimbledon, indecently assaulted a man across a span of over two decades. The incidents were reported to occur between 1973 and 1999.
The assaults were chiefly characterized by Fletcher beating the man’s bare buttocks with a gym shoe, a practice he called “six of the best.”
Following a two-day hearing, the jury concluded that Fletcher had indeed perpetrated these acts. The last recorded assault, occurring in the 1990s, was notably severe. The victim reported that the intensity of this final beating led him to contemplate suicide.
Now in his mid-80s, Fletcher was absent from the hearing and will not undergo a standard criminal trial. A 2025 judicial decision declared him unfit for trial due to dementia. Consequently, a full trial on multiple charges, including eight counts of indecent assault and one of grievous bodily harm with intent, was replaced by a fact-finding hearing. This legal process allows the jury to confirm the occurrence of alleged acts without leading to a conviction.
Fletcher held the position of minister at Emmanuel Church Wimbledon from 1982 until his 2012 retirement, gaining prominence within conservative evangelical Anglican circles. Previous independent investigations had already highlighted concerns about his behavior, including allegations of inappropriate physical “discipline,” naked massages, and abuses of power over several years.
During the court proceedings, a police interview with the complainant was screened. The victim described Fletcher’s attitude during these events: “He would just get it over with. Always six strokes. He gave the impression he found it distasteful … regrettable but necessary.” The beatings were framed as “spiritual discipline, promoting holiness in life.”
Fletcher did not dispute the beatings but insisted there was no sexual motive behind them.
The beatings were often presented as a disciplinary response to masturbation. The victim alleged that Fletcher would require him to masturbate in front of him as a demonstration of the act’s shamefulness. When the victim refused, Fletcher reportedly would masturbate himself.
