When 13-year-old Evan Mackey from the Sacramento area put a large lemon hard candy in his mouth and took a sip of water, he had no idea those next few moments would become a life-threatening emergency. The candy became lodged in his throat, cutting off his ability to breathe or call for help.

What happened next was captured on the family’s home security camera and serves as a powerful reminder of why emergency preparedness matters in every household.

Quick thinking by both parents

Elizabeth Mackey was the first to realize her son was in serious trouble. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, she made a split-second decision that would prove critical.

“I immediately noticed he was choking and then my brain thought dad can save him much faster than I can,” she said. Rather than attempting the rescue herself, she quickly alerted her husband Joe, who was closer to their son.

A father’s instinctive response

Joe Mackey’s reaction was immediate and decisive. “Didn’t think. Grabbed him. One good thrust. It worked,” he said. The remarkable part of this rescue is that Joe had never performed the Heimlich maneuver before in his life.

The home security footage shows the dramatic moment when the candy flew across the room after Joe’s perfectly executed abdominal thrust. The obstruction that Evan later described as “one of those big like probably quarter size lemon hard candies” was completely dislodged.

A mother’s worst fear realized and resolved

Elizabeth’s relief was palpable in the moments following the successful rescue. “You’re not ever eating those again,” she immediately told Evan. She later revealed, “It’s always been my biggest fear of one of my kids choking.”

True to her word, Elizabeth disposed of every remaining piece of that particular candy. “Oh no. I threw them all away instantly,” she said.

Lessons in emergency preparedness

The Mackey family’s experience highlights the critical importance of knowing basic life-saving techniques. Despite never having performed the Heimlich maneuver before, Joe was able to execute it successfully when seconds mattered most.

This incident serves as a compelling case for all parents and caregivers to learn essential emergency response skills including the Heimlich maneuver, CPR, and basic first aid. While training provides the knowledge, the ability to act decisively under pressure can make the difference between tragedy and triumph.

The entire ordeal lasted only moments, but for the Mackey family, it was a stark reminder of how quickly a normal afternoon can turn into a life-threatening emergency and how preparation and quick action can save a life.
