Southern Baptists Support Pregnancy Centers with Ultrasound Initiative
In an effort to bolster support for pregnancy care centers in abortion-permissible states, the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) has unveiled an initiative known as “Across State Lines.” This recent campaign is an extension of their ongoing Psalm 139 Project, which focuses on equipping centers with ultrasound machines in regions where abortion laws are less restrictive.
ERLC interim President Gary Hollingsworth highlighted the campaign’s significance since the 2022 reversal of Roe v. Wade. He remarked, “we saw how the Lord was working and stirring a cooperative spirit within Southern Baptist life to support pregnancy centers in abortion-permissible states.” The project aims to deliver hope through the Gospel and provide mothers with the crucial support of ultrasound technology.
The initiative plans to focus on states where few restrictions protect preborn children, aligning with Hollingsworth’s statement that the ERLC’s Psalm 139 Project continues to “strengthen pregnancy centers engaged in life-saving work.”
Collaborative efforts are already underway, with Texas Baptists contributing equipment to New Mexico, and Alabama Baptists reaching out to remote areas of Alaska. Additionally, Southern Baptists from Alabama, Tennessee, and New England are set to support centers in Vermont, where an official dedication for new equipment in Williston is scheduled for next week.
Further expansion of the initiative is possible, as discussions are ongoing with two centers in need of machines in states known for being destinations for abortion services. Hollingsworth expressed his hopes that the initiative would inspire generosity and a relentless commitment to life across state boundaries.
Hollingsworth emphasized the Southern Baptist belief that life is divinely granted from conception, stating, “Southern Baptists stand firmly on the truth that God has created all people, from the moment of conception, in His image and endowed them with the right to life.” He also noted that these centers not only highlight the value of physical life but also promote the eternal life offered through faith in Christ.
