Urgent Call for Support as Ebola Crisis Worsens in DRC

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is grappling with its 17th Ebola outbreak in 50 years, and Tearfund, a Christian development charity, is urging for increased international support to combat the escalating crisis.

Despite the frequency of outbreaks, limited awareness and pervasive poverty exacerbate the situation. Many locals remain unaware of Ebola’s severity, with some even questioning its existence, leading to hostility against healthcare workers.

Basic hygiene, such as handwashing, plays a crucial role in preventing the disease. However, in regions where clean water is scarce, these practices are often seen as luxuries.

The epidemic has claimed over 1,000 lives since its onset, marking a significant and alarming milestone. Poppy Anguandia, Tearfund’s Country Director in the DRC, remarked, “This is a grim milestone to have reached in what is emerging as the fastest Ebola outbreak on record. Tearfund’s focus on engaging faith leaders and community outreach is vital to building trust, helping to correct misinformation, and delivering life-saving water and sanitation services.”

Tearfund’s strategy includes empowering religious leaders with health education resources to become credible voices in their communities, thereby dispelling myths and promoting effective disease prevention methods.

Physical resources such as chlorine and handwashing stations are being distributed, and local churches are undergoing disinfection processes. Additionally, the charity is leveraging local radio and plans to expand outreach via online platforms like TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, and WhatsApp to combat misinformation.

While expressing gratitude to donors, Anguandia emphasized the need for continued support, stating, “We are incredibly grateful to the UK public for their generosity so far, which has already enabled these life-saving interventions.” She further stressed, “Tearfund remains dedicated to standing with the most vulnerable, but further support is urgently required to sustain this first line of protection against Ebola.”
